Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a contrast to Hoover's beliefs. As a Democrat, he believed in a strong, central government and he believed that the only way to escape the Depression was through the help of the federal government. In his inaugural address, he stated that, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." During his first 100 days, Roosevelt focused on uniting the American spirit, and would often appear on the radio on what people referred to as "Fireside Chats". During his presidency, Roosevelt passed many reforms that he believed would stimulate the economy and hopes of America.
