United States Supreme Court Cases
Near v. Minnesota ex rel. Olson (1930):
A periodical attacked local officials in Minnesota, causing them to obtain an injunction to stop him from releasing his newspaper. The Supreme Court ordered that it violated the First Amendment right of free speech. |
Powell v. Alabama (1932):
Nine black youths accused of raping two white women were sentenced to death after an Alabama court rushed through their trials and their appointed attorneys did little to defend them. The Supreme Court ruled that the court violated the 14th Amendment's clause of due process. |
United States v. Miller (1939):
Two men charged with violating the National Firearms Act argued that it violated their right to bear arms. The Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment did not uphold the right to bear a sawed-off shot gun because it did not have a "reasonable relationship" with preserving a well-regulated militia. |
